Pronunciation: /ˈkɒm.ən/ Explain

In mathematics, something is common to multiple mathematical objects if it is the same for each of the objects.

  • A common factor is a factor that is 'common' to two or more numbers or expressions. 2 is a common factor for 4 and 16. x2 is a common factor of x3y2 and x2z.
  • If x - y = 2, 2 is the common difference between x and y.
  • The common ratio in the geometric sequence { 1, 3, 9, 27, ... } is 3, since the each number is 3 times the number before it.
